List of professional baseball teams in the United States by city
This is a list of professional baseball teams in the United States by primary census statistical areas. This list is based on US Census populations and not TV market size.
There are a total of 569 primary statistical areas in the United States. Of these, the largest which do not currently have a professional baseball team are #58, Tucson, Arizona (which had a Class AAA team until 2013), and #61, Honolulu, Hawaii (which had a Class AAA team until 1987).
Professional baseball in the Americas is composed of teams from Major League and Minor League Baseball, as well as several independent baseball leagues. This is the hierarchy of professional leagues in North America:
* Major League Baseball, composed of two Leagues, the American League and National League, currently comprising a total of 30 teams, 29 in the United States and one (the American League's Toronto Blue Jays) in Canada
* Minor League Baseball
*
* Class AAA, including three leagues: the International League (14 teams in the United States), the Pacific Coast League (16 teams in the United States), and the MLB-independent Mexican League (16 teams in Mexico)
*
* Class AA, including three leagues (the Eastern League, Southern League, and the Texas League, with 30 teams between them, all in the United States
*
* Class A, including two sub-classifications:
*
*
* Class A-Advanced (High-A), made up of three leagues: the California League, Carolina League, and Florida State League, with 30 teams between them, all in the United States
*
*
* Class A (Low-A), made up of two leagues, the Midwest League and South Atlantic League, with 30 teams between them, all in the United States
*
* Class A-Short Season, which includes two leagues, the New York–Penn League (14 teams in the United States) and the Northwest League (7 teams in the United States and one in Canada)
*
* Rookie Class, including two sub-classifications:
*
*
* Advanced Rookie, which includes two leagues, the Appalachian League and Pioneer League, with 18 teams between them, all in the United States
*
*
* Rookie, which includes two leagues in the United States - the Arizona League (14 teams, all in the Phoenix metropolitan area) and Gulf Coast League (16 teams in Florida) - as well as the Dominican Summer League (in the Dominican Republic) and the Venezuelan Summer League
* Independent Leagues, consisting of teams which are not operated in conjunction with either Major League or Minor League baseball. There are currently eight independent, traditional-season leagues in North America, which have between them a total of 63 teams (59 in the United States and 4 in Canada): the American Association, Atlantic League, Can-Am League, Frontier League, Mount Rainier Professional Baseball League, North Country Baseball League, Pacific Association of Professional Baseball Clubs, and Pecos League. (Two teams in the Pecos League, the Alpine () Cowboys and the Trinidad () Triggers, are not shown in this list, as they are not located in cities even large enough to be considered micropolitan statistical areas, defined as having an urban area of at least 10,000 people. Also not shown in this list are two traveling teams, one in the Frontier League and one in the North Country Baseball League.)
Additionally, there are ten off-season leagues, six affiliated with Major League Baseball and four independent. All are located in Latin America, other than the Arizona Fall League, the six teams of which operate in six of the same facilities used by the Arizona League.
